I am running XP Pro and when I cold boot the mouse is frozen after the
computer starts. I have to reset and upon rebooting the mouse works fine.
The only recent changes to the machine are a CPU upgrade from 1.6gz to 2.4 gz
and the normal MS security updates. I am guessing that there is a driver
conflict somewhere somehow but the device manager shows no conflicts. I am
thinking about printing out a bootlog to see if it shows a problem. If
anyone has a suggestion I would greatly appreciate any help. BTW mouse is
Intellepoint optical 2.0

How do you reset - pull the plug - hit reset - CTRL + ALT + DEL ?

The recent processor change could mean a BIOS upgrade to your mobo. Be aware
of specific details that motherboard manufacturers allow you to install
certain types of processors in their boards. Armed with this, check the
newsgroups to verify for your mobo, for example
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus for Asus motherboards

I checked and I am running the latest bios version. The mobo manual says it
supports 1.5 through 2.0 GHz "and upwards" I guess I can put the 1.6 cpu back
in and see if the problem continues. Thanks again for your suggestion

yvw......

The upwards is a stupid cop out phrase. At the time of printing the book,
the 1.6 was 'the fastest" cpu available maybe, but a few other prototypes of
faster CPU's were in the lab, but not tested officially.
If you take their word, you could put in a 10Ghz processor and this would be
2.0Ghz upwards wouldn't it? and you would find a gaping hole in your mobo as
a result!

You are exactly right. Mobo could not handle the CPU even with a bios
upgrade. New mobo and a lot of reinstalling and all works great. Thanks for
the help.
