Hi,

I have a problem that seems similar to others I've read about in the
newsgroups, but none of the solutions I've seen seem to help.

Ive Windows XP Pro on a Pentium 4, with a geforce 440mx graphics card.
Recently (pretty much the same time as I installed sp2, but cant be
totally sure), it started being wierd. The mouse stops moving for
about a second, followed by a beep from an internal speaker.

At first it was occasionally, now its getting almost un-usable.

What I have done:

1) Got a brand new virus checker. Full update. Nothing
2) Ran adaware, spyblaster and a couple of others. Nothing
3) Watched the processor usage when it is freezing to look for a task
that it using everything. Nothing.
4) Checked all of the fans inside are working and clean. I have 4 -
one to cool the whole box, one mounted to the processor, one on
something else on the motherboard, and one on the gfx card. They are
all ok.
5) Ran it with the side off to keep it cooler. Still does it.
5) Installed a free app to check internal temps. It was called
speedtest, fantest or something. One temp was reading 127 degrees. But
it does from cold too, so I guess its a dodgy reading. Also it doesnt
say what the temp is for.

My next step is to try a new PSU. Any other ideas? Surely I cant have
to keep buying new parts until I find the broken one.

Stew,
Could it be that your problem is with the mouse device itself? My mouse
stopped working (don't know why) after I installed sp2 - I got a new one and
it works fine.

But I still have a big problem minimizing windows (separate post).

My feeling is that SP2 is v. intrusive and plays havoc with the system. I
would not recommend anyone to load or install it

Conor,

Thanks for the suggestion, will give another mouse a try. Im not
holding my breath though.

And I agree with you about sp2, its caused nothing but grief for me
both at home as a gamer, and at work as a software developer.
