Mouse boot problem

I am running XP with a microsoft optical mouse. On startup the mouse
sometimes does not come up (the light is off). It blinks a couple of times
and then fails. If I pull out the USB plug and put it in again it starts
and allows moving the cursor but the extra buttons do not work. How can I
make it always start. I have tried pointing it up, moving it around during
boot.

Hang in there. I am tracking this problem down bit by bit.
I have isolated it to a windows update but as I updated
six at one time I can't find which one caused this. For me
it means that even though I have a USB to Serial adapter I
can not boot the machine with both the keyboard and the
mouse plugged into their respective serial ports. If I
unplug the mouse and use the USB it boots fine. Or if I
unplug the keyboard from the serial port it's fine. I am
presently checking to see if this is due to the new 4-in-1
Via-Hyperion driver. I am going to roll back to an older
one and see. Good luck.

Do you have legacy usb devices enabled in your BIOS? Do other usb
devices work in that physical port? Does the mouse give you problems if
you connect it to a different usb port?
