Mouse and cursor

How do I stop the mouse from auto selecting when I pause over a selection; selection automatically happens without clicking the mouse. I am using xp on a Dell laptop. Also, how do I stop the cursor from jumping around while I am typing. It happens in word and when using email, Outlook and Yahoo.
