Most recent XP updates and troubleshooting

With the installation of these updates, I lost sound and have not been able
to get it back. The computer also locks up often.

I uninstalled SP2, but that only created more problems (although I did get the
sound back), so ran System Restore and everything is installed and I'm back to
square one.

What is the reason for this and how do I change it?

You really haven't given much information. What updates, specifically? Was
SP2 one of them? If not why did you uninstall SP2 if it was working fine
before the updates? Why not just uninstall the updates that caused the
problem? Did you try a system restore? What is the malware status of the
computer?

In any event your best bet is to post your question to the experts in the
Windows Update newsgroup and include some relevant information.
