Just from the brief time I've been here, I've got the feeling that questions
about Messenger service popups are the most commonly-asked in this group. Am
I right? What are some of the others that you wish people would take just a
few seconds to search for on their own?

Nah that is too much like work! Most people just want to be TOLD what to do,
you know like nice little sheep.

1. "On how many computers can I install a single license for WinXP?"

2. "How do I find my Product Key?"

3. "How do I bypass the password I forgot?"

4. "I just bought WinXP. Why can't I find Word/Excel, etc.?"

Don't be quixotic! :)

There are many commonly-asked questions. But unlike some others
here, I don't at all have a problem with someone asking them
without searching first.

The people who ask the commonly-asked question are obviously new
to Windows XP, and often even new to computers in general. If
they knew enough to realize that they could easily get the answer
by searching, they would probably also know the answers to the
commonly-asked questions.

1. Where is the backup utility for XP? (that deserves to get asked by us
idiot OEM people who don't have any backup!)
2. How do I format my drive?
3. How do I partition my drive?
4. How do I dual boot?
5. How do I burn CDs?

All of which are reasonable enough questions if people are looking for a
place to start albeit Google would probably be the first place to start.

6. How do I delete an undeletable file?

5) Why do my icons not show in the systray? (or not hide, or whatever)

6) Why doesn't 'search' for *.dbx find any of my OE files? (substitute
the filename of choice).

7) How do I format C: using WinXP?

8) Why do some folder names show in blue? (or green, but that one's
rare).

9) What are all these $NTUninstall..... folders doing on my system, and
can I delete them?

10) Why can I only 'save as' a .bmp file in IE6, when I want to save as
a .jpg.

11) Do I have the 32 bit or 64 bit version of WinXP?

12) Why are XP folder marked 'read only' and I can't change it.

..... and several more ...

Greetings,

I sure agree with what Ken mentioned above.

If they knew more information about computers and how systems work they
could probably figure out how to do it themselves. And they would search out
the answer for themselves.

Also, people who are new to computers do not understand how newsgroups work.
If they understood more about their computers and newsgroups they would
understand how to search newsgroups for other posts related to their
problem. Also, searching Microsoft Support and Microsoft Knowledge Base can
be quite a challenge in itself.

However, many posts would go unfound in a search through a newsgroup because
the Subject of posts do not clearly state the problem or question people are
trying to solve.

I appreciate the individuals who respond toughly to posts and answer
questions. I have learned a lot of useful information by reading newsgroups.

Just my thoughts and understandings.

LOL! That's really funny coming from the guy who has answered this
question incorrectly 217 times and still counting! Let us all know when
you actually find a US Copyright Law that prohibits indivduals from
installing retail software on more than one computer, because that will
be a really effin' cold day in Hell!

Smartest answer to date, and at last you do help (except for that
gormless Pro and Home comparison you dO!).

It definately was a very thoughtful answer! Kudos Ken!
Bwuce Chambers doesn't
have that thinking, and Perdita X. Dream, doesn't have any love
enough in her life to ever consider that people in the world that you
describe using PCs, really exist, if only for her to have something
to rip other on others about.

Don't you mean:

Sarah Balfour, AKA: Magrat, Black Aliss, Cassandra, Amethyst

PXD has more aliases than the average prohibition gangster had! ;-)

Goddamn, 217! Is it that high now, and can't Bruce compile anything new, other than copy-n-paste technocrap? Proves he (they) are as clueless to what they are saying, as to what they are pasting!

Do ya' think someone should get in touch with NG service provider to
complain about his repeatedly sending the same message over & over
again, what is in essence, nothing but SPAM?!

In the meanwhile, where can I find it?

Thanks.

And, for all the nuisance us novices cause you, I want you to know
you guys are wonderful and a life saver for many of us. Thanks again.

Google groups (http://groups.google.com/) archives almost all
newsgroups, not just the Microsoft ones.
