More than 10 simultaneous connection

One PC with WinXP Pro as server, whenever more than 10 workstation in LAN
connect to the server, an error message will be displayed.

1. After some search in the net, I read that WinXP will not accept more than
10 connection, can anyone confirm this?

2. The only solution I found is to set the autodisconnect value to a lower
value so that idle workstation will be disconnected faster to leave slot for
others to connect to. Any other solution?

3. If there's no other solution, what would be the best solution without
spending four figures?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Niel,

1. Yes.
2. Nope
3. Server (yup, 4 figures or more, unless - tried using Linux yet?)

WinXP is a "personal" operating system, and as such this is one of the
limitations. If you want to use a system as a multi-user file server, then
you need an operating system that supports it.

Win98 doesn't have that limit. Have many customers that can't afford a
server OS that don't need much more than a file cabinet for storing files.
This works fine.

Just make sure it is reasonably fast, with around 256-512 megs memory and a
fast hard drive with enough space. These days that shouldn't cost that much
either.

XP Pro as a Server? The maximum Peer to Peer workgroup
computers Microsoft recommends is 10. XP will not allow
you to go beyound. Place a server and make a domain that
will be much more secure.

Wrong. Windows 95/98/Me/2000 all have the same 10 connection limit.

This probably explains why one previous 'government website' had problems.
Cant remember the website URL, but I remember the "10 user problem"
limitation.
