How far back can one reasonably go in doing a system restore in XP. I would
think that going back further than 1 week, for example, opens up
possibilities of conflict with other things that have happened within that
period of time lessening chances of success (or, increasing chances of
conflict). Also, If you decrease the size of the space used for system
restore ( I have a 160 GB HD so 12% is about 18gigs) what happens to the
existing restore points-are the older restore points deleted first, leaving
only those more recent ones that fit the revised space?

The further you go back, the more changes you're likely to undo. Note, your Documents and Settings folders won't be affected. And yes, restore points are flushed out on a first in, first out basis.

That depends entirely on how frequently you make system changes.
I know many XP users who never change anything or install
anything, and they could probably go back months without a
problem. For others, even a week may be too far back.

It is certainly true that the farther back you go, the risk of
such problems increases.

That's why, for most of us, the default setting of 12% of the
hard drive space is much too much. With my 75GB drive, I have my
system restore set to only 1% and I still get about 5 or 6 weeks
of restore points. It's highly unlikely that I would ever go back
that far, and even 1% is more than I need.

Yes, that's correct. For almost anyone, 18GB is *way* overkill.
