I was able to run an repair with the Windows cd and am now able to run
Windows.

Now after downloading all the updates the mouse doesn't work.

I see it in the items that appear on the screen during the boot-up.
About 2-3 seconds after hitting the power button.
And it lights up too (this is a Microsoft Optical mouse like this one:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=004 )
but once I see the Windows XP screen, you know the one with the lever that
moves from left to right, the light on the mouse turns off and there is
absolutely nothing I can do to make it come on.

They keyboard how ever works just fine.

The mouse is hooked up via ubs. But when I move the mouse, using the
adaptor, to the more old fashion plug neither it nor the keyboard will work.

The interesting thing is that this started happening after one of the
updates. Could have been SP2 but I'm not sure, there were so many I
downloaded. Before it the mouse worked just fine.

Help!

Thanks for all your help so far. It's been tremendous.

Does the mouse show up in device manager?

What model do you have?

Do you have or tried to reinstall with mouse cd?

I am not seeing the mouse in the device manager. But I also don't see
anything being crossed over like they do when something is wrong.
I do see the mouse cursor it self. And the mouse does light up during the
boot until the Windows XP screen. Then it's lights out for good.
I also do see the mouse icon on the bottom, next to the clock because I
installed the Microsoft IntelliPoint software.

Thanks

Jay

Also when I go into the Mouse Properties in the Control Panel there is
nothing in the Hardware tab under Devices.
I tried to go through the Add Hardware wizard but that didn't help.
The funny thing is that during boot-ups I see the mouse light come on and I
also see it in the itemized DOS like section right after hitting the power
button.

Thanks

Could it be that once Windows starts booting the USB ports become disabled?
I don't see any problems with any USB's in the Device Manager.
I just think it's funny that I see the mouse listed until the computer start
booting Windows.

You say your keyboard works fine but you don't say if it is USB keyboard.
Is USB support enabled in BIOS?

I would uninstall Mouse software. Sound like it is initializing for "DOS"
environment but not in Windows.

If mouse is not in Device Manager, it won't show up in Control panel either.

Jay, what happens if you boot up without the mouse connected, then plug
it in once you've reached the desktop? Do you get New Hardware Detected
then? Anything in Device Manager?

When I do that nothing happens.
No new hardware detected and nothing happens in the device manager.

I did uninstall the mouse software restarted, plugged the mouse in but still
nothing happened.

What do you mean:
"Sound like it is initializing for "DOS" environment but not in Windows."
is there a way to fix that and make it carry over to Windows?

Why is it that after I run the repair CD my mouse works just fine untill the
first Microsoft updates I install?

Thanks

Only after I install the first updates. And those are updates that were on
my computer before I got the initial NTLDR error.

Thanks

How about "Basics"? New batteries in mouse? Did you use a paper-clip or
inkpen and "Reset" the mouse?[Push into small hole, bottom of mouse, in front
of the light]
Is the mouse "Receiver" obscured from "line of sight" with the mouse? Other
things could be coincidence. Does the mouse work without the 5.2 software?,
or do you have 5.0, and need to update?

I will try your suggestions tomorrow when I get going. It's 2 am central
time now.
But I can tell you this now. I did try two different mice.
The other one came from and went right back to my other, working, computer.
Nothing happened once the computer was past the BIOS.

I'm wandering if there is some sort of a communication problem going on in
the motherboard.
Perhaps it's fried.

Thanks

Okay. . . the mouse tail=light comes on during the boot, then goes off;
If you plug it in after reaching the Windows desktop, you don't get New
hardware detected or any sign in Device Manager.

I am only guessing but I wonder if there is something wrong with that
USB port. Can you try the mouse in another USB port? Try another USB
device (keyboard perhaps?) in the suspect port?

Do you *have* any other USB devices on the computer, and if so, do they
work?
