Hi, I have a toshiba laptop running Win XP home and suddenly the monitor darkened. The computer is otherwise running normally and the device manager shows no problem. I have reloaded the XP and Toshiba update drivers - no progress. I am able to use the computer with an external monitor plugged in at this point and can see the duplicated images on the laptop when a really bright image is displayed.

Is there a contract or brightness control in XP? My laptop does not seem to have one. Any other suggestions?

Laptop screens are backlit by using flourscent tube/s. If the backlight
goes out you probably will get the problem you are showing. Is the computer
still under warranty? If so, the next stop will be Toshiba's tech support.
If not under warranty, a computer shop which deals with laptops.

XP does not have a brightness control. Your computer does however.
Normally it is the Fn key and an F key. Mine is F10 for bright and F9 (look
for an outline of a sun and a filled sun) for dim. Most laptops will not
dim too much so you can't see the screen.
