Monitor Wont Sleep

Setting the monitor to go to sleep after X number of
minutes does nothing. I looked around on the net and was
unable to find anything useful to help me; but, I did
notice that my monitor type was "Default Monitor" and I was
unable to select the real monitor type I have. I was
wondering if this could some how be related.

I know my video card (Nvidia Geforce 3) will turn off the
display because it works fine in Linux.

Could anybody shed a little light? I'm lost.

Check the hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest Windows 2000
driver for your device.

Power managemement of monitors in W2K is broken.

If you actually ever get it to work, settings won't stick, they quit turning
off
the monitor after some random amt. of time. One morning, after letting
the monitor power down via the Windows settings and going to bed,
(I was letting several video streams render overnight), my LCD display was
being cycled on and off every 5 minutes, for some reason. This is NOT
GOOD for monitors of ANY kind.

I have given up and now use a one-click manual monitor
power-off utility:

This suits my needs far better than the problematic built-in
stuff. And doesn't exhibit any of the crappy behavior
discussed above.

I tried that with no luck. I have the Nvidia Geforce 3 and was running
the Microsoft drivers up to about a month ago when the Microsoft Update
Site released a new version of the driver. These drivers slowed my
video performance to an unusable amount and I then switched to the
Nvidia drivers, which I believe were released some time in early
December. For what it's worth, I don't think it's a driver issue
because the display hasn't been shutting off for the past 2 years, with
or without the Microsoft drivers. I just never cared in the past
because the monitor I had been using didn't sleep anyway.

I was beginning to suspect that when I heard of other people with
similar experiences, who also could never get it to work.

I had one randomly switching between 640x480 and 1024x768 but didn't
catch it before the monitor arced over.

I'm very famaliar with Steve's work and I must say that this is the
first utility that didn't work for me. The -monoff argument just
blanked the screen for some reason. That's more then Windows was doing
though. Maybe an upgrade to XP is in my near future. I've been wanting
to rebuild the computer onto a larger, faster disk anyhow.

Thanks for your help,

Sean

I meant monitor driver.

Oops, sorry about that. No driver came with the monitor and the tech
support guy told me none was needed because it was Plug & Play. I
really think this is a load of crap because all Plug & Play monitors
I've ever gotten have had a driver of some kind. Whether it were
included with the device or part of the Windows Driver Database, I had
something; or, it simply wasn't a Plug & Play device, in which case I
just used "Default Monitor" and/or set everything manually. In this
situation, I am unable to do this because the Properties button for my
monitor is grayed out.

Check the monitor manufacturer's web site for a Windows 2000 driver. Then
use Control Panel|Add New Hardware to install it.

You've got to be one of the fastest responders ever!

Anyhow, been there, done that, no luck :-S. It's a Microtek 815C. Is
there any way for me to check which drivers are included in the driver
database? I want to see all of them.

Have a look here.
