Hello,

I am posting this on behalf of a friend, please excuse me if this is the
wrong group. He has recently built a new system, on which he was planning
to install his XP Home. After assembling all the kit correctly, he tried
his1st boot up. Power got to the system and it all "sounded" fine, however,
his monitor goes into standby mode immediately, as soon as he switches the
system on. The monitor works fine on other systems. He has an AGP graphics
card, Nvidia Geforce 4, which also works fine in other systems. His memory
also works good too, and obviously because there is no display, he can't
access the BIOS. If anyone can offer ANY help, it would be MUCH appeciated.

Kind regards, TIA

J

Make sure that the Video Card is totally seated in the agp slot. Same
with Memory, and CPU.

Hi J,

I had this happen to me recently. For me, it was the fact that I had
onboard video on the motherboard, as well as a video card. Once I went into
the BIOS and shut off the onboard video, the AGP card worked great.

I am not sure if that's the case with you, but if you have a system with
onboard video, it's a good thing to check out.

If you do NOT have onboard video, try going into safe mode and seeing if you
can get something to display there. Could be that the video card is taking
the monitor out of its range, whereupon the monitor will simply not display
anything. This is an experience I had with an older monitor and a newer
video card.

If you can get into safe mode, make sure that you set the video adapter at a
reasonable setting, say 800x600 and 16-bit color before rebooting. That way
you should be able to boot back into normal mode and get the latest video
drivers for your card. You can also download drivers using safe mode with
networking, if you are on a broadband connection.

Hope that helps!
