monitor incoming and outgoing activity

I connect to the internet through a dish and at times
there is actvity (I can see the incoming and sending
lights flashing) even though I am not on the net. Is
there any way to monitor and see what information is
being sent and received when this activity is occurring?

To see all the activity on the network connection, install a packet
sniffer. A good free one is Ethereal, from http://www.ethereal.com
