Monitor.exe

I am running XP and for the majority of the time the task manager tells me
that Monitor.exe is using 90% plus of the processor time. Can anyone tell me
what is causing this and is there a cure please.

"Monitor.exe" does not belong to WinXP. Why don't you check its file
properties in order to find out that file's origin. If there is no
such information, scan your system for Malware ASAP.
 
I have previously scanned for Malware and deleted a couple of files and have
just scanned again and there was nothing. Searching for Monitor.exe it was
found in 2 places.........C:\Program Files\Acronis\True Image and
C:\Windows\system32\Zone Labs\avsys.
Zone Labs is where I got my Zone Alarm anti-virus software and Acronis True
image is software on my drive for restoring my machine put there by the
builder of the machine. Hope this helps.

Start > Run: MSCONFIG > Startup tab.
Most likely, "Monitor.exe" will show up in that list and you should see
also where (Acronis or Zone Labs) that particular file belongs to.
Due to that poor behaviour, I'd recommend to uninstall the associated
software entirely.

Download and run Process Explorer from MS. In that you can highlight the
monitor.exe image that is using the resources and get info about it,
including where it's located. That will tell you which of the two programs
is the problem.

I use both ZoneAlarm, albeit the free version, and Acronis True Image
Home version 10. Both of them are quite well behaved on my systems.
Also, in my task manager, the Acronis monitor is listed as
TimounterMonitor.exe and is politely using 0% at the moment. I don't
believe ZA or Acronis have anything to do with the OP's problem.

I don't care what poor software the OP's "Monitor.exe" belongs to. Not
a Windows issue anyway.

Yep. Especially if someone states that this buggy and unnecessary ZA

And this is a Windows issue? If you don't like ZA, don't use it. I use
it because I'm either stupid, or it appears to work for me. Take your
pick. I'm done with this thread.

Evidently those with haughty opinions on the subject have not tried looking
up "monitor.exe" in Google.

A search indicates monitor.exe is a Microsoft file associated with Win2K
Server and it monitors network activity. Or it is a program used by Marine
Corps snipers to track manufacturing defects in specialty ammunition.
