money 2004 shuts down when i try to restore backup

i've read a few related threads but haven't seen any that suceeded.
after hard drive failer and replacement i reloaded money 2004 and tried
to restore from a backup file on an external hd (also copied to new
desktop). locates backup file but when i enter password money shuts
down. slv.exe won't recognize the backup file, only *.mny files. have
tried to rename and store in non-default location with no luck. HELP?

You might want to post to the money newsgroup, as this problem seems to be
specific to that program.
