What I have changed this default to is a network folder that houses
templates that I want everybody in my department to be able to use. The
good is that it is only one file I need to change for everyone to have
access to that particular template. Bad news is everyone has to be out of
Word in order to copy over an updated file, since these files are opened
whenever Word is opened.
Pretty handy though when working with document management systems that have
lots of templates. The one I use is a blank template with a toolbar with a
few buttons on it, one that opens a UserForm providing access to all of my
templates.
Hope that answers your question.

I am just curious. I have Word 2000, open a document, select
tools->options->file locations and under start up, the current value is
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP (this is the same value set by the installation
program).
Question: What is the significance of this file location? Under what
situation there is a point to changing it from the default?
