Modifying computer case

I know that this isn't related to Microsoft. I have a
foxconn/allied supercase. (also known as Apex) The
website for the cases is http://apextechusa.com. The
model of my case is 1150-P4-BK. It's black. Is there a
way that I can put an acrylic window on it? If so, where
can I get them? How do I put one in? Do you think my
case will be compatible with a cold cothode light? My
motherboard is an Asus A7V333 if you need to know that.
I have a 300w power supply with my case. I would proudly
like to display my hard work in my computer. To sound
even a little more impressive, I am only 15 years old. I
started learning how to build computers nearly two years
ago. (I know that there are younger ones out there, but
it is still pretty good)

It's not very manly wanting to show off your motherboard. Perhaps Asus could make you a feralboard or a gangboard (perhaps even a chickboard).

When I was 15 we wanted see through bonnets to show off our carbies.

You can use a tool called a nibbler to cut any shaped
opening in the sheet metal and you can cut a sheet of
plastic to fit and close the panel. But plastic does NOT
block emitted electronic radiation and such a case with a
window will allow stray electronic noise into your local
area. This may get you in trouble if the neighbors have TV
and radio problems. In the USA, the FCC has rules and I'm
sure the UK has similar rules.

There are was to cut sheet metal besides a nibbler but some
can distort the metal and others are too expensive. You can
buy an extra side panel, some even pre-moded. Check on
Google for case mods, then your brand name.

Yoshi DeHerera is constantly on TechTV showing all kinds of case mods

| Go to Ebay and run a search for "Case Modding". You will be greeted with a
| plethora of cool goodies such as cold cathodes, pre-cut case windows,
| nibbler tools and instructions on how to do it. An acrylic window with a
| seal shouldn't cost more than 15 bucks. The nibbler tool around 10 bucks, a
| cold cathode light can go as high as 20 bucks (I recommend Sunbeam Cold
| Cathodes). A 300w PSU should be enough for now but if you have a CD burner,
| pick yourself up a quite Antec PSU aroung 400w (shouldn't cost more than 60
| bucks). Remember, as soon as you cut the case side, the noise will increase
| and the acrylic window will only lower it slightly.

Do mod cases you need three things...

Tools
Talent
imaginaton

Serach Google for "Case Mods" There are hundreds os sites devoted to
this past-time with many suggestions and ideas. They can recommend what
tools you need, what paints to use, and how to do certain effects such as
etched windows and various lighting options.

Light, both biode and cold-cathode, are not case spcific. You just need
to buy the right size gor the effect you wish to accomplish.

I;d recommend you start with an old, junk case before you mess with
your good Apex. There are some things you need to practice before you can
start creating "Works of Art". You need to learn how to work with the
various materials case are made from. Steel, Aluminum, Plastic, etc. Each
cuts and paints differently.

As you are 15 years old. I also recommend you work on these with your
father and get him interested. One, He can show you the proper use of the
tools, and two ( and more important ) if he gets interested, you might be
able to convince him to buy you to better tools :)

One warning. Once you get into case modding. You may not be able to
stop, and may start wanting to mod other things. I got some ideas for my
car.... :)

Good luck,
David
