My Outlook email account is currently configured to
receive internet email and leaving copies of the emails on
the server. I would like to change this, so that they are
deleted. When I attempt to un-check the box that
says, "Leave email copies on the server" and click OK, an
alert box opens stating that "This account is already
being used." It looks as though there is no way to simply
modify the settings. I don't want to go throught the
hassle of creating a new account and migrating files over
from the existing pst. Please let me know if there is
another option?

Thanks.

Did you perhaps have 2 instances of Outlook running? Check Task Manager and
make sure there isn't a remnant outlook.exe left running from the last time
you thought you closed Outlook. If you have Outlook supposedly closed, have
waited about 30 seconds for it to close, there is no window anymore, but you
see outlook.exe listed in the Processes tab panel of Task Manager then kill
it. A reboot would've obviously also gotten rid of the second dead
instance, too.
