I have a laptop that has bad on-board sound.
Every time I try to install WinXP, it crashes when it
attempts to detect/install drivers for the sound.
This also happens in Win98 but I can restart and continue
with little or no probs.
Can I modify the way WinXP installs so it won't auto-
detect/install sound card drivers?

Open your BIOS and disable the audio. Then install Windows XP
and afterward visit the laptop manufacturer's support website
and download all the specialized Windows XP drivers designed
for your specific laptop model. Make sure to re-enable your audio
in the BIOS before installing the laptop Mfg's audio drivers.

Unfortunately, I already tried that. The BIOS doesn't
support the feature to disable the audio.

You can open a command window during setup; then you can try and
delete the INF files for the defective hardware so it's drivers won't be installed.
