Hi
1- The context:
I have a ready-made computer so it vas preinstalled with Winows XP Home
in a unique partition C: In order to facilitate the backups, I have
planned to create 2 paritions : C: for windows and installed programs
and D: for datas. (I've got Partition Magic)

The problem is that on my config the D: letter is already used for the
CD drive.

2- Question :
What will happen if I name my second partition with D: too ? will
Windows automatically shift the CD drive to E: , or have I to modify the
letter myself beforehand ? If so, how can I do that rename of the CD drive ?
Thank you

windows assigns the letters as it boots, and always has removable
drives after fixed drives so you should be fine to call the new
partition d then boot it and your cd rom will be e.

Flamer.

To change the drive letter on any drive except the system
drive (in your case C:) right click on My Computer. Left
click on Manage. Left click on Disk Management. In the
bottom right side of the window you will see the drives
listed. Find your CD ROM drive. Right click on the CD-ROM
0 and then left click on Change Drive Letter and Paths.

When the next window opens you should see the current letter
for the CD-ROM. Click Change... In the dropdown list to
the right of Assign the following drive letter: scroll down
to the letter you want to assign, click on it and then click
OK. The drive letter will change. This will leave room for
the partition you want to create.

If you have already created the partition you described,
simply move the CD-ROM drive letter and then move the newly
created partition to drive D: if you want.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Just make the partition and give it any drive letter (except C). If you give
it D, windows will automatically make your CD Drive E. If not, you can :
1. Boot in Windows
2. Click Start > Run
3. Type diskmgmt.msc
4. Right click your CD Drive
5. Click Change Drive letters and paths
6. Click Change and then change the drive letter.
7. Now, right click your new Partition, Click Change drive letter and paths
8. Change it to D:
