Modem speeds are different

I have a computer with Win 98 and can get 53.3k speed on
my modem. When i put the same moden in a different
computer with Win XP, it will get 26.5K. The Modem is a
V90 fax modem. I even purchased a newer modem V92 and the
same problem exist with both computers. Also Im running
AOL 4.0 and 8.0 respectfully. Thanks for any help you
have.
