Excuse me for what is probably a simple question. I get a little confused
setting up a modem. Do the com ports in the BIOS get enabled or disabled
with a modem? Right now I have only Com port 1 enabled in the BIOS. My
modem for some reason is on COM 3, (IRQ 22) why wont it go to COM 2? This
is very frustrating. Should I enable COM 2 in the BIOS.... Thanks, sorry
if this is a dum question, Mike

Why is it a problem what com port it is on...?
I have mine turned off in bios, and let windows handle it.

Nick, I was having problems with Windows XP Fax and believe that because its
on COM 3 that has something to do with it. I would prefer for it to be on
COM 1 or COM 2. So you have both your COM ports turned off in the BIOS?
Thanks, Mike

Uninstall your modem, reboot and disable the com's in the bios. Reboot and
windows will reassign. But I don't believe that to be your fax problem. What
was the problem...?

Thanks Nick, well I know that the XP fax was quite problematic. I was
unable to receive a second fax, the first was ok, but the second would not
pick up just ring and I would get port busy at times. The modem has always
installed itself as COM3 which annoys the H out of me. I have not tested
the modem now that I have SP2, but its possible that the FAX app was fixed.
Do you have XP fax working successfully? I am using a USR V92 PCI modem
that has hardward error correction. Any light you can shed on the FAX is
appreciated. For your information I had the same problem with Mighty Fax in
this computer and that is what gave me the clue that COM3 was responsible.
Thanks, Mike

I have used the fax very little and not had a problem. But I know their are
issues. Try this NG
microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax

Thanks for your help, Nick
