modem problem

well im just wondering im new to computers so be quit if this questions sounds dumb....i have 56k modem but when i connect to the net it says connected at 50.6k is this ok? but wat does it all mean 56k a sec? oh yeah and when im downloading how do i keep the KB/s at high rate not dropping off...shouldnt it be 56k a sec? or is that only for buisness computers cause when i download its goes 28KB/s then 1 sec later it drops to 18 KB/s then like half a sec later it drops to 5 and satys around that 5 and 6 mark...is this natural??? please help...

50.6 is a good connect speed for dial up, most don't. Most download are
dependent on who you are downloading from and how many pc are between you
and the file you want. Some downloads are very slow and you have no control
over that. 56k means 5600 bits per second.

It's normal for download speed to be reported high at the start, then
settle down to a steady, lower #.

Throughput is what really matters. That's the amount of data transfered
in a given amount of time. Calculate it by dividing the size of the file
into the time it takes to d/l it.

For a 56K modem, ideal throughput would be in the range of 5 to 6 KB/sec.

Be aware that the CONNECT speed that is reported initially may change
throughout the session, without your knowledge.
