I don't know what's up, but i can't set up internet access
on my hp, the modem will log on once during setup, then
not again because all the phone jacks quit working. Is it
the modem, computer, or phone lines. This machine is off
the same line, different room, no problems.

Your post is about as clear as mud!

"This machine is off the same line, different room, no problems."

If you are saying that it works in a different room, it must be a problem
with the phone lines. Otherwise, please post back to this thread and try to
re-state the problem more clearly.

Carol,

Are you saying that once you dial ONE time from any phone jack in your
home/office - it kills the phone line itself everywhere (other rooms, etc -
throughout the home/office on the same physical line) until the modem is
physically unplugged?

If this is the case, how long does it take after the modem is unplugged from
the circuit for a dial-tone to return?

Sorry.
I have two computers in my apartment. This one is
a "frankenstein", the other is a HP Pavilion a200n. I
have only one line in the house, I have no problems with
this machine and it causes no problem with the line. The
other one I cannot get online with, previously I could but
it had the blaster worm and the last time I tried to get
online when it had the worm it knocked out the phone line
through the entire house. Since then I have fdisked,
reformatted and reinstalled XP on it but when I try to set
up my ISP it will dial out one time then when it tries to
dial out for access numbers it says no dial tone, etc. I
then check the line and all jacks in the house are dead.
I just don't know if it is connected to the worm, if I
should buy a new modem, call the phone company or what.
thanks for any assisstance, just didn't know if this had
ever been a known issue.

If "all jacks in the house are dead" it sounds like you have a problem for
your telephone company.

Generally, telephone companies' responsibility for telephone wiring ends at
the point where their wire enters your house, unless you have another
arrangement with the telephone company. Inside wiring is typically the
customer's responsibility, which means calling an electrician.
