modem jams up the system

I am encountering the following scenario -

As I connect to the internet via a dialup modem ( connection is established)
my applications turn unresponsive. Nothing opens. Then after say 1-2 minutes
applications open up( which i had clicked on earlier). Everything is normal
now.
This situation lasts for about the same time period everytime i log on to
the internet.

Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Get Process Explorer (free) from
<http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml>. Provides way more
information than Task Manager. Start it just before you start your internet
connection. Watch to see what process takes over during the 1 - 2 minute
period.
