I have a Acer Travelmate 220 laptop with Lucent Tech Soft
Modem. A day ago the modem started telling me it could
not connect to the internet because something else was
connected to the modem. At about the same time I started
having problems with my sound card. The Intel(r)
82081CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller has a ! on it in the
device manager. When I query the modem it seems to test
OK. I have shut down everything that might connect and
run Spybot software to check for spyware. I am now
running on a PC card modem on the same computer with no
problems. I have tryed uninstalling the modem and audio
controller and reinstalling them but the problem returns.
HHEELLLLLPPPPP!!!!

OK< Disabling the sound card let me connect. So now, how
do I fix the problem so the modem and the sound card will
work at the same time as it has for some time now. Thanks
for the help. Chuck

Try installing updated drivers for both your sound card and your modem
if possible. If I am not mistaken, the Intel AC'97 Sound Card is only
on Intel Chipset motherboards, so here would be the latest drivers for
your motherboard (which would include the sound card drivers):

Thanks Nathan. Have the most current drivers. This has me
baffled since all was well til a few days ago. I have
made no changes to the computer. The sound device and the
modem share the same IRQ 11. Don't know if that would
make any differance. The modem works fine without the
sound card enabled and the sound card works fine. Acer
computer is not being much help. They just suggest doing
a system restore. And of course the system retore option
in XP does not work. Any other suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

Sharing IRQ's can often be fixed by simply switching the PCI Slot that
your mdem is in. Turn off the PC, unplug the modem from its current PCI
Slot and put it in a different one. Now when you boot up, it should
recieve a different IRQ and work ;)

Is your modem and the sound card "on board" the laptop
motherboard? I don't know for sure if you can reassign the
IRQ manually but it might be worth a try. Did you update
the BIOS using something other than from ACER?

Duh, you can't do that since it is a laptop. I'll shut my mouth now.
See Jim's post as it is better than mine. :)

You will need to change the IRQ in the BIOS in this case ;)

How many points is that worth?

I really don't have any use for them, the Green Stamps'
store won't accept MS points.
BTW, my mother maiden name was McAnulty.

JIm, The modem is onboard. I have not updated the bios at
this point. Since I have never reassigned an IRQ, mabe a
little how to or where I might find that info so I won't
cause conflict with something else. Many thanks, Chuck
