modem installation and system administrator

Am trying to install a new modem and drivers in a computer that was used in
an office environment, and apparently was part of a Local Area Network.
Modem installation seems to go well with new hardware recognized and new
drivers installed, but a trip to Control Panel shows hardware installed but
not drivers-thus modem shown as "not attached." I'm logged on as user only,
and I've been unsuccessful making my user name part of administrator's group.
Without access to the previous administrator of this LAN, is there anyway I
can make myself the new administrator, part of the administrator group, or
disable those security blocks altogether?

Do a Google search. There are numerous ways to interject into
the Administrator's logon and take over as Administrator. But
the normal route is to have a current system administrator make
the change.
