I want to add auto answer to my PC so it can be an answering machine and
conversation recorder. What's the best hardware to use? I don't currently
have a modem on the machine. I have 1 PCI slot currently available.

I bought the Hummingbird modem/fax/answering machine/voice mail pci
card from Fry's for a few bucks. Then I spent a day trying to get
it to work. I think it uses the SmartLink chipset, but it has been
a little while and I may have made a mistake in the naming. But a
number of folks on the net have described their difficulties in
getting that particular chipset to work.

So you could try it or perhaps avoid it. I think on sale it has
been as little as $9.
