I installed the IEEE 1394 firewire av/dv card that came with Pinnacle Studio ver. 9. I replaced my CD writer with a DVD writer. At the same time, Norton Anit-virus expired. Now I can't access the internet through my ISP. I have a Compaq PC 2.7GHz with Lucent 56k modem. The modem will dial and complete the handshake with the ISP. The ISP registers my computer on the net, and then authorizes me, just like always. However, when I open explorer, I get the "this page can't be found / unable to locate DNS error". My outlook won't work either. It says "unable to find mail server ....

Device manager indicates all devices are working properly. I check the IRQ addresses and they are not in conflict with each other

My ISP tech support went over everything their manual told them to go over with me

Please help.

Try uninstalling Norton, while it shouldn't be running interference I have seen it in the past after it expires. Also check the modem settings. Disable Error Control and Switch the Flow Control to XON/XOFF if it is a win or soft modem. Lastly If all else fails, reinstall the modem in Windows and use updated drivers from the manufacturer website. Also Try reinstalling the Dial-Up Networking Connection in Network Connection incase it has become corrupted

Did you figure it out? I just installed a firewire card on a multiboot system with XP Pro and W98SE. After install on XP I had your problem, Internet connected then no data transferred after successful connection. Found no conflicts anywhere, tried disabling firewire in device manager, reconfigured a different dial up connection, all with same result. It also messed up network connection between my 2 PCs. I tried a system restore after disabling the firewire with no luck. Since the modem dialed and connected appropriately I don't think the modem is the issue. The only thing that worked was to physically remove the firewire card and restore to an ealier restore point. Everything was fine under W98.
