Yes it is possible.
Check your motherboard manual and/or check the manufacturers website
on that motherboard.
The tool on this link may also be able to help: http://www.crucial.com/
You also may have a problem with the memory and motherboard if there
are detection issues.
I had a 1998-vintage PC that could only accept 384 Meg. So, a PC of say
1999-vinatge, maybe a bit later, might have a limit at 512 Meg. However,
most current motherboards have limits set by the intended operating system
(i.e., XP), and that is about 4 Gig.
From what I understand, it actually isn't the OS that limits the max
amount of memory, it is the processor. Only 64bit processors can address
more than 4 GB of memory.
Anyways, yes, it is possible you have a limit of 512 MB and you need to
let us know what the make and model of your motherboard (or computer)
is. Good luck to ya
The BIOS might be updatable. It is possible that each slot
can only see 256 MB, so you could get a full gig with all
full, it jus might not see a single 512. Get EVEREST free
from www.lavalys.com and find out the details of your
system and the data you need to upgrade the BIOS or download
the mobo manual.

The max memory limit could also be dependent upon the memory you use, ie.
single-sided vs. double-sided, one- or two-banked etc..
