Harddrive , keyboard/mouse, only ones connected to board.

Sound appears to be around the CPU area (not cooling fan) Sock A--- intel
800 p-3 has a high pich sound with a sound like a fan rubbing, that goes
down in tone in stages.

Gues---have try all the knowledge that i have. ("The only real thing i
know , is that i know nothing")

thks in advance

A fan is mechanical and you say it sounds like a noisy fan. You then say the
fan is OK. Did you test it? How?

Have an older IBM scsi drive (ultrawide) that sounds like a jet engine
starting up during intitial turn-on. The sound is opposite yours, from
lower frequency to higher to above hearing frequency.

If you have a case mounted PC speaker, disconnect it temporarily. Does the
sound go away?

Does your computer work otherwise, except for the sound you describe?

unplug the power to the fan--sounds were still there... anythig else to
try? at this point will try anything once...

That's a hardware issue and has nothing to do with "Windows XP".

If you cannot locate where the noise comes from, take the computer to a
technician/repair shop.

Wil, as a last resort, maybe not the area to post this, hardware for sure,
was looking if anyone had or heard of a problem like this?

You may have an extra case fan doing it.. or a CD drive, or a hard drive, or
the power supply, or the fan on your video card.. check for cables being
'caught', in close proximity..

Sounds like a fan bearing. If you cannot locate it (is there a cooling fan
on the video card?), then shut down and take it to a technician who can. The
longer you tempt fate, the more likely it is that something will overheat
due to lack of proper cooling. That will only compound your troubles.

To locate a mechanical noise I used to use a wooden dowel about 1/2 inch in
diameter by 12 inches long, slightly rounded at one end. I place the dowel
against the suspected part and put the rounded end against my ear (not in
the ear please). It is truly amazing at how any sound will be amplified in
this fashion. It is easy to localize the source of the sound.

I have since obtained an old stethoscope and fitted the dowel to it. Works
even better.

power to only fan running was CPU cooler fan(disconnected it and sound still
there.

all that i know is when this sound retreats back to no audio, system boots
up appears to run ok... try that one: trying to avoid Tech shop this is a
chorch group PC and a poor one.

If you only have an HDD connected, (no CD drive), and there are no case or
video card fans, then it will be either the power supply or HDD.. try the
drive in another computer to see if the noise reappears.. if not, look to
your power supply..

So, you are saying that you have bootup problems also? You should have
mentioned this in your first post. It sounds like your hard drive is going
bad.

The fan in the power supply had better be running also, unless you have one
of the newer cutting edge power supplies that are designed to be fanless.

just took it out of the box -fresh new--not say a new one could be bad, but
sound appears more in cpu area amd when it stops pc boots up..

If you can't find the problem yourself it's time to take it for service.

Stop the fan with your finger for a second to see if its the cpu fan.

Tryed that---mobo--cpu-fan and power lead only thing hot, still the
sound---Once the sound stop, pc would boot up and run, when the other devices
were hook up.
