MMC failed to create empty document

Using windows xp home edition.
I cannot open administrative tols. System - Performance -
Computer Management only the Data sources (ODBC)
is funconing.
I cannot defragment the drive. Error message:
Microsoft Management Concole
Failed to create empty document.
Please help!!

I ran into the same problem on my Win2k Pro machine today. I found a
solution on a German thread in Google Groups. The link to that thread
is below. The solution I used is to create a new directory,
"C:\TEMP\1", then set the TEMP and TMP Environment variables to that
new directory. I did that for both User and System variables. Then I
was able to run mmc again. After it worked, I then reset the TEMP and
TMP variables to C:\TEMP and it just kept working. This must be a bug
in the mmc. Microsoft support, are you guys listening?

I don't know if this will work on Windows XP, but it's worth a try.
At least it is easier than the other solution I found which required
the reinstallation of Win2k.
