MMC.EXE Errors on Start

On my wife's machine, if I try to run defrag, or MMC.EXE directly,
MMC.EXE shuts down and reports an error to MS. The error message is
that the Microsoft Management Console experienced an error. Nothing
specific beyond that.

I've tried the snap in repair from Kelly's Korner and that did not
fix it.

The MS Support article says to re-install the Microsoft Monitor using
the Add/Remove Programs.

I've tried that and it is not specifically mentioned.

Can anyone give me the specific directions on how to try to reinstall
MMC.EXE properly?

Thanx in advance,

Paul

Mmc.Exe (C:\Windows\System32) is monitored by Windows File
Protection. If you simply rename it, XP will automatically re-install
a fresh copy from it's Dllcache folder or ServicePackFiles. If it can
not locate a replacement copy - it will prompt you for the install CD.

Thanks. I tried that and it did reload MMC.EXE as you stated. It
still won't run. I've also discovered that MSCONFIG.EXe won't run
either. Same error message.

When the error message appears, there should be a option that
says "More Details". If you click on it, the error should display a
module name that the exception event occurred in. Can you run
either application and capture the details info and post it ?

I'll give it a shot later today. Thankx.
