I've accidently deleted some Windows XP programs having to
do with the scanner functions. Is there some update that
will also review my files and fill in missing? Is there
some way I can reload windows XP without losing settings,
applications and files? From the web? I do not have a
copy of XP because it was delivered on my new HP computer.
I asked Microsoft and they said see Hewlett Packard. I
asked HP and they said "we don't do windows".
Thanks,
Sherwood Thompson

You can enter "sfc /scannow" in the run box, which searches all the
important poerating system files for XP and fixes them, but it usually
wants to have a CD or place to reference to update missing files from.
You could Borrow a Windows XP cd from a friend, or the CD that comes with
a new PC of one of your friends that has the XP operating system on it.
You can try the "sfc /scannow" anyway just to see if the people who made
your computer stashed a copy of the XPsetup files on your hard drive, and
they were smart enough to have the regisrty point to that Folder for the
setup files. (It's usually under a folder called "I386".) Good luck.
