missing<Windows root>\sys32\hal.dll

This is a long saga re "ntldr missing'. I have tried repair console. I have made afloppy containing ntldr and ntdetect.com as well as boot.ini on notepad.This lot get me to startup screen where i can pick Windows XP home or the default Windows. No matter which one I pick, I get the following: <Windows root>\System 32\hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of the above file
How exactly do I do this? I know where it is on the CD and I have copied it to the floppy.What is the full pathway? Remember, when I ahve tried to copyntldr from D drive ( copy D:\i386\ntldr C:\) I get "Access denied'. elgordo
 
Elgordo, that rarely ever works. If you have a WinXP CD then use the
Recovery Console. Try the Bootcfg,
Fix Mbr and FixBoot commands. If that doesnt work do a Repair
Install.

been thru repair console and "fixboot", and "fixmbr". With the latter I get that all partition info and files may be lost if I proceed. I might as well do a fresh install and not lose the info on the other partitions. Ta folks.
 
Two questions was any type of drive manufacturers overlay programs used
I.e. Ezdrive Maxblast? If so remove those first.
Then in the Recovery Console try a Chkdsk /R.
Have you tried Bootcfg /Scan and then /Add ?
