I changed an user account privilege using 'control userpasswords2' dialog
box. When I tried to log in using XP logon screen the user account went
missing. I went back to run the 'control userpasswords2' dialog the account
disappeared from the user list as well! I changed the logon to the classic
NT logon and was able to logon to the missing account. Anyone know how to
get back the missing account if I switch back to XP logon window? How do I
get this back onto the user account list? My system is XP Home.

Thanx

I have tried to add the missing user account but it returned with error
saying that I already have privileges for this user account on the computer
and exits. The control panel - user accounts dialog error message seems to
indicate that it recognizes the account but I can't see it on any user
accounts list or XP logon screen.

Thanx

tlo,

Go to Start > Run > lusrmgr.msc
and see if the account is listed there.
If it isn't, try to add it to the administrator or user group, as
you'd like.
While there, you can right click in any item and choose 'help' for
more information.

Good luck

I get a message that says that the local user and group feature is not
enabled for the Home edition.

I have also noticed that the missing account type has been changed to guest
from user.

Here is a summary of steps.

1. control userpasswords2 dialog -> change user account type to power user.

2. system responds with error (local user and groups feature not enabled for
home edition.)

3. logged out of admin and new logon screen does not show modified acount
anymore.

4. logged back into admin and ran control userpasswords2 and userpasswords
and the modified account is not listed anymore.

5. tried to create the modified account not listed and system returns that
the account exists.

6. changed logon window to NT classic and was able to login to modified
(missing) account.

7. logged into missing account and ran control userpasswords which shows
missing account status.

8. running control userpasswords2 - missing account is still not listed on
user list.

9. if you run control userpasswords from admin account the missing account
is not listed as well.

hope this helps.

Thanx

tlo,

It appears that your account got corrupted somehow. Is there a folder
with the name of the account in 'Documents and settings'?

You could try creating a different account, then copy the folders of
the corrupted account to the new one. If you can, do this from My
Computer > right click > properties > Advanced options > click User
profile and copy the account. But it probably won't be present there,
so you'll have to copy manually.

Or you can try these suggestions by MS- MVP Kelly Theriot:

Right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Locate
the entries for your hard disks and double click each entry. On the
Policies tab, uncheck Enable write caching.

You will see a performance decrease because of this, but if the
corrupt registry/user profiles problems cease, then you'll be certain
of the cause.

Logon to another account with admin privilege and run System Restore.
Choose the most recent restore point and SR should restore the user
hives.

Or...

Boot into safe mode and log in as Administrator. Copy ntuser.dat from
%windir%\repair to "Documents and Settings\[your user id]". Now do a
system restore to a point in time prior to when the corruption message
began to appear.

Or...

Relocate NTUserdat

Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and find the profile you want to change
and then change ProfileImagePath to the ntuser.dat folder that you
want to use.
You must manually copy or move the ntuser.dat file there.

Good luck
