Missing TSRs in Taskbar

I was wondering if this is a widespread problem or an
isolated thing. I myself and a friend of mine both have
a problem with Windows XP Pro not showing all the TSRs
for running programs. We both have the "hide inactive
icons" checkbox unchecked, but only about half of the
TSRs running that have taskbar icons are actually showing
up. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Does
anyone know how to fix it? It has given me a scare more
than once because I will think something important like a
firewall or antivirus software isn't running because the
TSR icon isn't there, but looking in the task manager it
really is running after all. Please help!

You programs aren't compatable with XP or other recent OS releases. They are supposed to listen and add themselves back if the shell crashes.

I don't think that is it, I have seen these TSRs in the
taskbar before, sometimes they come up, sometimes they
don't, but I have seen them in the taskbar before. Also
there should be a TSR for a currently running program,
correct? I am running multiple programs right now that I
can confirm in my task manager but their TSRs are not
there. Any other ideas?

TSR refers to Dos programs. Nothing that's a windows program is a TSR. Nothing in the taskbar is a TSR.

A program adds and removes it's icons from the Notification area. All explorer does is pass messages to the program (mouse is above your icon, user clicked it, etc). If explorer crashes (and it will auto restart) only 98/2000/ME/XP programs will add their icons back (cause the system sends all programs a message saying explorer crashed - but earlier programs don't know to listen for this message).

From the Docs
With Microsoft® Internet Explorer 4.0 and later, the Shell notifies applications that the taskbar has been created. When the taskbar is created, it registers a message with the TaskbarCreated string and then broadcasts this message to all top-level windows. When your taskbar application receives this message, it should assume that any taskbar icons it added have been removed and add them again. This feature generally applies only to services that are already running when the Shell begins execution.

You can try disabling the SSDP service which rarly affects some icons for unknown reasons.
