missing system32\hal.dll

I am running win xp and have a error message on my desktop.
It reads windows could not load because the following file is missing or
corupt.
"<Windows Root> system 32\hal.dll.
I have loaded my recovery CD and booted off this CD but whe I get to
where it asks me to type in Adminstrator password...I do not know what
it is. I never set one up but I can't get past this point to try and
repair my OS. Is there a default password or can anyone help me change
it? I can not access my computer at all.
