My machine would not boot up and displays the following error message;
"WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" file is either missing or corrupt.

The error message suggest me to repair it using the commercial original
Windows XP CD-ROM. I tried this but could not go far. I don't want to
reinstall
Windows XP and loose all my information on this machine. Is there a way to
repair this problem without reimaing the machine to it's initial version ?

Thanks,
Roubiko

If you can't recover as per
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545, you will
have to repair install. If that fails you will have to perform a clean
install. If your computer has only one partition - everything will be gone.

It's too bad you didn't "back up" your personal information, as is
recommended by every knowledgeable computer user. A hard way to learn a
lessen, but we have all had it happen at one time or another!
