Following the instructions on repair of Windows XP and the line

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system

renders 'the system cannot find the file specified'.

chkdsk /p also showed there was an issue with the hdd.

can anyone point me in the right direction

1. You haven't told us what "instructions on repair of Windows XP" you're talking about, so we have no idea what you're trying to do or why.

2. The copy command line contains no file names, which is probably why you're seeing a message that "the system cannot find the file specified".

3. If you suspect you have an "issue" (again, unidentified) with your hard disk, download and run the manufacturer's diagnostics. If you really do have a problem, the manufacturer will exchange the disk under warranty.

Did you ever verify that c:\windows\repair\system exists?
It does on my system but it may not on yours (with your disk problems)

That is what i would like to know. I gather it is always part of the program
but can a new one be created/inserted if it does not exist.

Or do i need to reinstall?

?
I must be missing something.
Nobody else here can see your computer.
Why can't you just look and see if it exists?

Sorry, the folder does not exist.

Chkdsk mentions 'The volume contains one or more unrecoverable problems'.
I gather that it the reason. This is not my system is quite old.
