missing shortcuts

Tried posting this half an hour ago, but it's gone missing.

When trying to pull a shortcut from an app to the desktop (vista home
premium, new HP Pavilion a1700n), the shortcut often fails to appear there,
though it does show up on the start menu. Have to reboot in order to see it.
This happen to anyone else?

Sometimes it can be 'off screen', which can be resolved by a right-click
desktop > Sort by > Name
