When I try to install some new programs I get this window,
"cannot find shell.dll". How did this happen and how to
I get a clean copy of shell.dll and what directory do I
put it?

Try:-
Start> Run> SFC /Scannow >ok

or,

there should be 2 copies of shell.dll.One in the C:\windows\system
folder and other in the c:\windows\system32 folder.
you have to copy the file if one of the folder doesn't have it.

Also scan your system with latest virus definitioned
antivirus/adaware/spybot,search and destroy.
