Suddenly I have noticed that the "safely remove hardware" icon is missing
from my Taskbar system tray. Since I need this fairly often, does anyone
know what might have happened and how I might restore it?

Thanks,

I copied this from an earlier Post. It's an answer to the reverse situation.
hope it helps.

This is normal Windows behaviour. You need this icon to
safely remove your scanner. When the scanner is plugged
in and you want to unplug it, you will have to let
Windows know that you're going to unplug it. To do this
you will have to double click on this icon and then
choose your scanner in the list of devices. Right click
on the taskbar and press properties. On the tab Taskbar
enable "hide inactive icons" (or something like this - I
use a Dutch version of Windows so I have to translate
it), it is that last option on this tab. Next to it
there's a button (adjust?)
When you don't want it in the systray, you can easely
hide the icon in Windows XP. A new windows appears. Click
in the list on 'safely remove hardware'. A combo box will
appear. Change this combo box to 'Always hide'. Close all
windows with OK.
