When I try to boot up my computer (running Windows XP), I
get the message that Windows cannot open because the
ntoskrnl.exe file in the system32 directory is missing or
corrupt. I have a copy of this file on CD--is there a way
to get it into its rightful place so that XP will run? Or
is this a partition problem?

Boot your Windows XP setup disc and run the recovery
console to replace the file.
NTOSKRNL.EXE belongs in C:\WINDOWS\System32

I'm going to ASSUME that your CD-ROM drive is D:\

Once in the Recovery Console at the C:\Windows> prompt, type the following:
COPY D:\I386\NTOSKRNL.EXE C:
Then press enter. This should copy the file from the CD to the root of the
C: drive.
