missing or corrupt config\system

from what I see, it's a corrupt registry problem... replacing the system and
software files did not solve the problem... plus, the laptop is running very
slow when copying files. I suspect a combination of hardware and software
problems. All I want is to make backups of my outlook and other files. If I
install WinXP on the partition, will it reset the Documents & Settings folder
(therefore losing all outlook data)? Or should I just take the disk out and
mount it as a slave on another computer

You could try running chkdsk c: /p

If that doesn't work, I definately recommend taking the drive out and
mounting it to another computer to grab the data off of it.

It seems that the corrupted registry fix suggestions did not work for
everyone. Myself included. I had to rip out the drive and mount it as a slave
on another system. ANd from the look of recent threads, a lot of people are
having the same problem. It's nice to get a solution to the problem, but why
did the problem occur in the first place? Why is Windows having problems
booting when a lot of people are running Windows update???

Just last month, I had to do a full repair of my OS after executing a
Windows Update. It would be nice to know why this is happening to so many
people
