After installing a new hard drive on an older computer -
this computer I have already run WindowsXP professional.

It will not boot from the hard drive or the cdRom from a
cd purchased from the book store of a university which I
am a student. It keeps giving me the error -"Missing
Operating System"

I am running out of ideas to fix this problem..

You need to format the drive first, you should run the new drive along with the old
as slave,then format,run,type:diskmgmt.msc
In msc,L.click the drive,actions,all,select format.When its thru,shutdown computer,
switch to master(jumper pins) install xp cd,boot to cd,select install when the xp text
appears. If the old drive isnt available, boot to cd,repair, press enter for password, type:
FORMAT C: /FS:ntfs when its thru,type:EXIT Reboot to cd,install xp.You must have
the full xp version, not upgrade, with that a diffrent approach is needed.
