HI, I am running windows XP pro.
When i start up, an error message appears:

"Windows could not start because the following files are
missing or corrupt:

<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Please re-install a copy of the following files."

Could you please advise me on what to do?

NTOSKRNL.EXE. This file is the kernel of the operating system Windows XP.
The kernel is responsible for loading, executing and communicating with device
drivers. After the kernel is loaded, services and drivers will be started.

Joe,

the cause is usually not that the file is missing, but that the
whole disk or partition cannot be found. If you have other tools
to get at the disk, you could check BOOT.INI and the presence of
the other boot files. If not, you could try a repair
installation of Windows XP from the original install CD.

First try to repair the boot environment. If that doesn't bring
the installation back to life, try once more and do the
following.

When the installation procedure asks you what to do, first tell
it to install Windows XP now. Then, after it finds the current
installation, tell it to do a repair installation.

Good luck!
