That left side window is called the Folders Bar. See the following MSKB
article for a possible solution. Let us know if this is the problem.

The Folders Bar in Windows Explorer Does Not Contain Any Icons:

Yes it was the problem... how do I make the fix perminent?
My root drive is "F" currently, can I change it to "C"
safely? Thanks for the help.

Sorry to say ken, there is no way to change the drive designation for
the boot drive on the fly. The only way to do it is to do a fresh install.

Hi Ken,

Adaptation for the Article: Needs to be a path not a drive letter, so subst
c: [x]:\. Note backslash converts a drive letter to a path. It must point
to a valid folder as in: c: d:\Windows
