After re installing windows and partitioning my hard drive my desktop screen
only has one icon - Recycle Bin - I can still access My Computer, IE, My
Network Places etc etc via the Start Menu but it is a but frustrating. I've
mangaed to make shortcuts to them all but thats not the same thing, is it!?

Go to your user. ie. C drive / Documents and Settings / Your User Name /
Desktop. Then add the programs that you want to it. Make sure you do not
remove the actual programs from their original place. Hope this helps.

[[If they are not already present on your desktop, you can add icons for My
Computer, My Documents, My Network Places, and Internet Explorer from the
Display Properties dialog box.]]

Right click Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab |
Customize Desktop button | Desktop icons

[[Specifies whether these Windows items will appear as icons on your
desktop. Select the check box if you want the item to appear on your
desktop; clear the check box if you do not want the item to appear on your
desktop.]]
