Is there a double arrow << to the left of the last icon?? If so you,ve
hidden the ones that arnt in use. Click on the << and hopefully it will be
there.

Start/ Settings/ Task Bar and start menu/ On the taskbar tab "Hide inactive
icons" - untick and it should be permanently on view.

:o)

Seems to me MVP Wesley Vogel went through this about 3 1/2 years ago. Maybe
he'll stop by and offer a hand. <g>

Hi Spikey,
In the past items list there is a file folder icon that says next to it
"safely remove hardware", but I can not make it do anything. It is not the
actual icon.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi,

With the external drive plugged in, right click the drive in the folders
list, then left click Properties and Hardware. Left Click the name of the
external drive in this list, then click Properties and Policies. This takes
you to the "Write caching and safe removal page". The default position in my
XP is "Optimize for quick removal" not "Optimize for performance" as implied
by Freecom and Microsoft. You can put the icon in the notification area by
clicking the underlined "Safely Remove Hardware" on this page.

I assume that "the folders list" is in windows explorer. Is that correct?
I went there and right clicked and then left clicked Properties and then
Hardware. I then left clicked the name, but Properties and Policies did not
come up. only Properties which was a dead end. I could not find Write
caching and safe removal page.

What am I doing wrong? Again thanks for your interest and help with my
problem.

I still have not been able to solve the missing "safe to remove hardware"
icon. Do you have any suggestions. You have helped me before. Please check
me last reply to Spikey. Thanks.

Does the removeable device (you didnt say what it was) work properly apart
from the icon issue? If its a dvd drive you may need a rw disc in.

Can you try it with another usb drive? pen drive, card readeretc.

The next thing to try would be an updated driver for the device, from the
drive manufacturer.

Thanks Spikey for your interest. Out of desperation I tried a cold restart
and lo and behold the icon reappeared. Computers never cease to amaze me.
thanks again.

I'm sure you've heard the old joke about 4 MS technicians stranded in a
broken down car who were advised to shut all windows and then restart!! lol.

I'm glad your icon returned. I
